Crete, Taverna Kosmas, Agia Galini
Since 1996, Kosmas D. Linoxilakis and his German wife Ines have run the family
business under the name TAVERNA KOSMAS. Our aim is to make our guests' holiday
more restful and to make the Greek way of life accessible. Crete is famous for
its hospitality and we want to emphasise this in our restaurant. Kosmas is responsible
for the delicacies from the kitchen and Ines pleases you with good service,
a smile and always a friendly word. We gladly give information about sightseeing
on Crete and of course are pleased to give you little secret tips. Particularly
important or us is the cuisine. We prepare typical, traditional Greek cuisine,
an extensive offering of vegetarian dishes, and Mediterranean, as well as Thai
cooking.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Kosmas K. Linoxilakis lost his heart,
not just to a wonderful woman, but also to one of the most beautiful places
in the world, Agia Galini. He married, left his home in the mountains of Crete
and settled in the village of his wife. In 1906 Kosmas K Linoxilakis opened
a traditional Kafenion, where he served Greek coffee and Raki (Tsikoudia). In
1957 his son Dimos K Linoxilakis took over the Kafenion and extended it to a
small supermarket in which it was possible to buy sweets, drops, chocolate,
as well as liqueur and Metaxa. He was the first to make ice cream in Agia Galini.
All of the children in the village wanted to work with him to get a portion
of ice cream as a wage. Dimos travelled to the island of Siros to learn the
preparation of traditional cakes. His speciality was vanilla, also known to
the locals as Submarine. He opened his kafenion for travelling cinemas, and
for parties that were celebrated in Agia Galini. From the seventies up to 1996,
the business was run by his nephews as a restaurant, under the name Libyan Sea.
In 1996, his son Kosmas D Linoxilakis took over the restaurant and continued
the tradition of a familiy business under the name Taverna Kosmas. He renovated
and gave to the restaurant a special, cosy atmosphere, so that those entering
do not know whether they are in the museum or a gallery or a restaurant.

Agia Galini in Southern Crete is home to Taverna Kosmas. This idyllic fishing
village used to be regarded as something of a well-kept secret. The Holy
Peace that the name Agia Galini (Aghia Galini, Ayia Galini) suggests is
something you will certainly no longer find. Agia Galini has become today a
well-known and lively holiday destination on the south coast, about 50 miles
from Heraklion, 75 miles from Chania and just over 35 miles from Rethymno. Nevertheless,
Agia Galini has been able to preserve much of its charm and is surely one of
the most attractive places in the south of Crete. This picturesque seaside village
invites you to stroll through the lanes, linger in one of the numerous cafes,
or be pampered in one of the cozy tavernas. The white-washed houses and hotels
are clustered on hills surrounding the port, giving mostly uninterrupted views
over the Lybian Sea. Nearby there are sights and several quiet beaches, which
can be easily reached on day trips. There are also daily boat trips from the
harbour to Preveli, Agios Giorgos, Agio Farago and Paximadi. Car and motorcycle
distribution and two bank vending machines are available in the village. Within
a few minutes, you can be at the beach or surrounded by nature. You'll very
soon feel right at home here in Agia Galini!
